Artist spotlight : H.M.Arafat
Artist Statement:
My work explores identity, belonging, and the emotional tensions that shape how we move through the world. Through poetry and visual storytelling, I focus on experiences of connection and disconnection. What it means to be seen, understood, or left on the outside. I’m drawn to repetition and simple language as a way of reflecting internal patterns, allowing complex emotions like loneliness, vulnerability, and resilience to surface in a direct and accessible way. Much of my practice is rooted in turning internal experiences into something tangible, giving form to feelings that are often difficult to articulate. I’m interested in the space between personal and collective experience, where individual stories reflect wider social realities. Ultimately, my work seeks to create moments of recognition, inviting viewers and readers to reflect on their own relationship to belonging, identity, and human connection.
Inspiration & Style
What initially inspired you to become an artist, and how did you develop your unique artistic style?
What inspired me to become an artist was that it was the only place I ever felt like I could belong. I could create worlds and places that no one could push me out of. I was never too strange or odd to exist in them. A space that always welcomed me with open arms and gave me comfort when nothing else could.
It’s hard to say exactly what my style was inspired by as it went through many stages of metamorphoses as I gained different exposure to different styles myself. Even now it is still growing. To try and answer the question I would say art styles like Moomin and Snoopy, the appearance of childhood yet the emotional impact of adulthood.
Creative Process
Do you have any rituals or routines that help you get into a creative mindset when starting a new project?
I usually wait for the idea to call me, and when it does, I listen to everything it asks of me. Therefore, it is important that I am not in the way. It is never my idea, but simply a vision I was trusted with. I read out the poem, and the drawing comes to me through a sketch and then everything follows after.
Artistic Influences
How do you balance historical or artistic influences with your personal style, and how do these influences manifest in your work today?
Whatever inspires me, I always strip it back to its emotional and colourful core, understand it , and then utilize that in my work. Allowing it to converge rather than take over and be a literal reference. For example, in one of my pieces I was inspired by the artistic style in an anime called Kimi No Todoke. When stripped back, it was how the movement of colour was used to express shifts in emotions. I then took that and utilized it in my work.
Emotion & Expression
How do you use your art to evoke emotions, and what role does emotion play in your creative process?
I use art to express what is often left in-between the lines. What people feel but struggle to articulate. We’ve all seen and experienced portrayals of love, sadness, and anger but there are sides to them we leave untouched. That we keep tucked away in our heart out of the shame that it is an isolated feeling. Emotion is the center of my work, and in expressing it the way that I do, I hope I can share how art has given me a space to belong. That no emotion is singular as an experience. To help others feel less alone and help them better understand the sides of emotion we don’t often discuss.
Exhibiting Work
How do you feel about exhibiting your artwork with The Holy Art Gallery, and what does this opportunity mean to you?
I am beyond excited as this is my first time ever exhibiting my work so it feels like such a personal milestone for me. I am grateful and cannot wait to see all the great artists that will be in the room!
Future Goals
What are your long-term goals and aspirations as an artist, and how do you plan to achieve them?
My long term goal is to publish my own book and I plan to achieve that by simply giving my work more exposure to the outside world through many different avenues. Who knows what might open up!
Audience Connection
What do you hope viewers take away from experiencing your art, and how do you aim to connect with them on an emotional or intellectual level?
I hope that through my work they gain strength hope and a greater understanding of themselves. The whole purpose of my art is to remind ourselves how connected we are. That we aren’t as alone as we think. That someone out there not only understands the feeling but has survived it too. I am to do this through art and poetry.
