Artist spotlight :Noni Garrett

ARTIST STATEMENT:

Hey im Noni My work explores identity, memory, nostalgia, and contemporary culture through mixed media, graphic design, and visual storytelling. Drawing inspiration from everyday life and personal experience.  I create compositions that blur the line between fine art and design. My work is alchemized through power, emotion and fearlessness, embracing the central parts of me through distressed textures that reflect the complexity of modern life while celebrating individuality.

My goal is to create work that feels both personal and universal,pieces that resonate long after the first glance.

1. Inspiration & Style
What initially inspired you to become an artist, and how did you develop your unique artistic style?
Answer: As a child i was intrigued by old 2000s cartoons and the imagination , creativity and unique style eachshow carried , the illustrators ability to tell a story with images, always drawing and using my artistic skills to create thought provoking stories.

2. Creative Process
Do you have any rituals or routines that help you get into a creative mindset when starting a new project?
Answer: My ritual practice includes heavy engagement with my inner self and allowing myself to take up space in my most comfortable areas. Around my home, the foods i eat ,the candles i light and the music that plays to create a mood unreplaceable.

3. Artistic Influences
How do you balance historical or artistic influences with your personal style, and how do these influences manifest in your work today?
Answer: My artistic influences are mainly referred from older african and black american artist over the years, alongside early japanese magazines and loud colors. A lot of themes of my art are influenced from my own experiences & emotions. Artist like David Hammons, Sam gillians uses of external object to take up mass with cloth art , Lois Maiou Jones vibrancy & portatiture usage alongside Ai Yazawas creative character design and fashion culture. In my own work I love the messy , crafty almost dark and gothic visuals that draw attention and allow the auidence to feel.

4. Emotion & Expression
How do you use your art to evoke emotions, and what role does emotion play in your creative process?
Answer: My main focus through my art is to have someone look at it and think" i see you". "I understand you". Emotion plays a key role in my practice, using the power of Alchemy. To alchemize is to transform. Sometimes our emotions can be frightened to the point where we aren't aware that we can use that energy, whether that be a feeling of sadness or the complete opposite of bliss and freedom, A lot of my collections are based on current phases of my lfie and reflecting on things and experiences i've lived that can translate through and help relate to others like.

5. Standout Projects
Can you share a project that stands out to you and describe the creative process behind it?
Answer: The making of my "FREE" a 5'9 physical standing piece mannequin was something i worked on in 2025, picked it up from a vintage store and it had a sticker on the chest that read"FREE" the item was free but i looked deeper, a female body that could represented as something that is and should not be "FREE". Thinking of the medium and artistic approach i have this strong connection with spray paints because of the unexpected turns spray painting can take you almost an adrenaline feeling, where the lines will draw, where the link will spread and using it as a practice of releasing control with ones self The mannequin took 6 months to finish, 10 different spray cans and one sketch mockup of what i wanted, i wanted it to reflect a realistic feeling spraying white to reflect the theme of gore, her limbs being cut off and dripping blood the painted wings and hand prints on her legs which can evoke the feeling and thought provoking question , is the modern day women today even "FREE"?

6. Feedback & Growth
How do you incorporate feedback from critics or audiences into your work, and how do you balance this with your own artistic intuition?
Answer: I welcome feedback because it helps me stay self-aware and continuously improve as an artist. I see criticism as an opportunity to grow, refine my skills, and explore new approaches. At the same time, I balance that feedback by thoughtfully incorporating it into my process while staying true to my signature style, ensuring each piece reflects both my artistic vision and my ongoing development.

7. Motivation & Inspiration
How do you stay motivated and inspired, even when facing creative blocks or challenges?
Answer: I use creative blocks as space to do nothing that has to do with art, sometimes these challenges just mean its time for some rnr (Rest and Recuperation..lol).

8. Exhibiting Work
How do you feel about exhibiting your artwork with The Holy Art Gallery, and what does this opportunity mean to you?
Answer: Like any artist we want to be seen publicly, we want our art to communicate the passions, feelings and emotions we feel but cant tell anyone verbally. Art is a form of communication , exhibiting at Holy art is an experience like no other, to have your art viewed at a larger scale amongst all types of viewers, you never know where these things can take you and i'm grateful to take advantage of the opportunity to connect and show love to the art collective that continually opens their arms to creative and passionate artist like myself.

9. Future Goals
What are your long-term goals and aspirations as an artist, and how do you plan to achieve them?
Answer: My long terms goals are to have my art viewed, sold & shared globally but also to host my own creative events for black female artist with opportunity to learn and engage with other artist. To continue working on my design buisness and building a creative studio. I also plan to continue to work on my second collection of works and digital pieces and to be a all around creative that doesnt fit into a box.

10. Audience Connection
What do you hope viewers take away from experiencing your art, and how do you aim to connect with them on an emotional or intellectual level?
Answer: I want viewers to feel both nostalgic and intrigued when they experience my work. My goal is to evoke familiar emotions and memories while presenting them in a way that feels entirely new—something they haven't seen before. I hope the contrast between familiarity and originality encourages people to look closer, question what they're seeing, and form their own personal connection with the work.
