Your First Art Exhibition: What to Expect, Step by Step

Most artists put off their first exhibition for the same reason. Not the cost, not the work, but the unknown. What actually happens? Will my work look right? Will anyone come?

Here is the whole thing, step by step, from a gallery that has walked 25,000+ artists through their first show.

Step one: you get selected

You apply through an open call, free, with images of your work. The curatorial team reviews it. If selected, you receive confirmation with everything you need: dates, format options, and how to secure your spot. Spots per city are limited and submissions are reviewed as they arrive, so applying early gives you the most options.

Step two: you choose your format

Physical means your original work hangs on the gallery wall. You ship it framed, we handle the rest. Digital means your work shows on gallery screens, no shipping, no customs, nothing to frame. Both formats appear in the printed exhibition catalogue, and both hang in the same show, side by side. First timers often start digital in one city, see how a show works, then go physical in the next one.

Step three: we install everything

Curation, placement, hanging, lighting. You do nothing here. Our team has installed 400+ exhibitions, and the reason artists are consistently surprised on opening night is that a properly lit gallery wall makes work look the way the artist always saw it in their head.

Step four: opening night

The first evening of every show is the private view. Wine, a full room, artists standing next to their work, and visitors ranging from collectors to complete strangers who wandered in and stayed. You are not required to attend, your work exhibits either way, but if you can come, come. Watching people react to your work in person is the part nobody forgets.

Step five: the show runs, and the catalogue stays

The exhibition runs for its full dates with public visitors throughout. Afterwards, the catalogue remains online, because interest in a piece does not end when the show closes. You leave with professional photos of your work in a real gallery, a line on your CV that stays there forever, and the answer to the question that kept you from applying: yes, you belonged in the room.
