The gatekeeper model is not the only model
Traditional gallery representation goes to a tiny number of artists, usually ones who already have visibility. Waiting to be chosen is not a strategy, because the people doing the choosing are not looking. Everything that follows is about becoming visible without permission.
Exhibit first, worry about prestige later
The fastest way to build credibility is to exhibit. Not once, repeatedly. Open calls exist precisely so artists without representation can show in real galleries.
