How to Frame and Ship Your Artwork for an Exhibition)

You got selected. Now the work has to get there in one piece. Here is how to frame, pack and ship artwork for an exhibition without the stress, and when it makes more sense not to ship at all.

Frame it ready to hang

Galleries need work that goes straight onto the wall. That means framed, with hanging hardware fitted, and a wire or D-rings on the back. Unframed canvases can be hung if they are stretched with clean edges and hardware attached. All physical works at The Holy Art arrive framed and ready to hang, and it is the single most common thing that delays an install.

Keep frames simple

A clean black, white or natural wood frame suits almost any work in a group show. Ornate frames fight the work and rarely fit the room. Glazing should be acrylic rather than glass for shipping, it is lighter and does not shatter.

Packing that survives the journey

Wrap the work in glassine or acid-free tissue, then bubble wrap, then corner protectors. Place it in a box with at least five centimetres of padding on every side, or a purpose-built art box for anything valuable. Mark the box fragile and this way up. Photograph the work before you seal the box, in case you ever need to claim.

Shipping internationally

Use a tracked, insured courier and declare the work correctly. For cross-border shipping, include a commercial invoice describing the work, its value and that it is for exhibition. Build in more time than you think, and factor customs delays. Send to the gallery's drop-off window, not before, so nothing sits unattended.

When not to ship at all

If shipping costs more than the exhibition itself, or customs makes it impractical, exhibit digitally. Your work is shown on gallery screens in the same room as the physical pieces and included in the catalogue, with nothing to frame or send. Many international artists do exactly this, and many start digital then go physical once they know the ropes.
