ARTIST STATEMENT:

My name is Huaixuan Xiang, and I am a painter and illustrator specializing in fantasy illustration, cover art, and painting. I graduated from the School of Visual Arts and received my master’s degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology. My work is deeply influenced by dreams and meditation, often carrying a surreal and nostalgic quality. I want to create art that transports viewers into dreamlike realms where emotions can be shared.

I always find inspiration from my dreams, meditations, and the flashes that appear in my mind. Most of my artwork focuses on expressing feelings that cannot be spoken. I believe that as people grow older, they gradually smooth out their edges and lose sensitivity to intense emotions. I know that one day I may become calm, but until then, I want to feel everything, capture it, and pour those emotions onto the canvas.

Before each painting, I immerse myself in my dreams and try to relive not only the imagery, but also the emotions. I intentionally amplify these feelings until they become physically intense, and I hold onto that energy throughout the entire process. I understand these dreams as reflections of the subconscious, sometimes echoing shared or collective memories.

I believe that the energy embedded in a painting does not disappear, it remains within the work. Because emotion is a universal language, I hope my paintings can resonate with viewers and awaken their own memories and feelings. For me, painting is both self-exploration and healing. It is a way to understand myself and share that experience with others.

Inspiration & Style

What initially inspired you to become an artist, and how did you develop your unique artistic style?

I think my desire to become an artist came from my need to express emotions and images that I could not fully explain with words. Since I was young, I have always had vivid dreams and a strong imagination. Many of my ideas come from dreams, meditation, childhood memories, and strange flashes that appear in my mind. Over time, I developed a surreal and introspective visual language that allows me to translate those inner experiences into paintings. My style grew naturally from trying to understand myself and the emotional worlds inside me.

Creative Process

Do you have any rituals or routines that help you get into a creative mindset when starting a new project?

Before starting a painting, I usually sit quietly for a while and return to the image or emotion that first inspired the work. Sometimes I meditate, and sometimes I simply stare at the ceiling and let my mind become empty. I try to remember the details of a dream or an emotional moment, not only what I saw, but also what I felt. Then I keep amplifying that emotion, immersing myself in it and experiencing it again, until I can feel my heartbeat growing heavy. When the feeling becomes strong enough, I begin sketching and try to hold onto that energy throughout the whole painting process.

Artistic Influences

How do you balance historical or artistic influences with your personal style, and how do these influences manifest in your work today?

I am influenced by many sources, including mythology, spiritual imagery, dream symbolism, and traditional painting. I am also interested in how historical art uses symbols, atmosphere, and storytelling to express something beyond daily reality. At the same time, I try not to simply copy an influence. I absorb what resonates with me and allow it to pass through my own dreams, memories, and emotions. In my work today, these influences appear through symbolic imagery, surreal spaces, and a sense of mystery.

Emotion & Expression

How do you use your art to evoke emotions, and what role does emotion play in your creative process?

Emotion is one of the most important parts of my creative process. I often begin with a feeling that is difficult to describe, such as nostalgia, fear, tenderness, or a strange sense of familiarity. I try to turn that feeling into an image. I believe emotions can remain embedded in a painting, almost like traces or imprints. Even if viewers do not know my exact story, I hope they can still feel something through the work and connect it to their own memories and experiences.

Exhibiting Work

How do you feel about exhibiting your artwork with The Holy Art Gallery, and what does this opportunity mean to you?

I feel very grateful and excited to exhibit my work with The Holy Art Gallery. For me, showing my work is not only about presenting finished paintings, but also about allowing my inner world to meet other people. This opportunity means a lot because it gives my work a chance to reach a wider audience. I hope viewers who encounter my paintings can feel a sense of mystery, emotion, or familiarity, even if they come from a completely different background.

Future Goals

What are your long-term goals and aspirations as an artist, and how do you plan to achieve them?

My long-term goal is to continue building a body of work that connects dreams, memory, emotion, and the unconscious. I want to keep developing my painting practice while also working across illustration, publishing, exhibitions, and art fairs. I hope to create works that feel personal but also universal. To achieve this, I plan to keep painting consistently. I will continue participating in exhibitions, sharing my work with audiences, and allowing my visual language to grow naturally over time.

Audience Connection

What do you hope viewers take away from experiencing your art, and how do you aim to connect with them on an emotional or intellectual level?

I hope viewers can slow down when they look at my art. I do not want them to feel that they must fully understand the story behind each painting. Instead, I hope they can look, feel, and interpret the work through their own experiences. If one of my paintings makes someone feel like they have been somewhere similar before, or reminds them of an emotion they once had, that means a lot to me. I want my work to become a shared emotional space, where viewers can see something of themselves through my images.
