ARTIST STATEMENT:
My projects are inspired by what happened in 2020. It was unforgettable, but even in that tough situation, people never surrendered hope, kept seeking happiness, and tried to change the world. So in my artwork, I want to send the message that people are strong, no matter what tough situations they are faced with. Inspired by this theme, I created a CD jacket for my favorite K-pop idol’s new song. I added the broken mirror to symbolize him breaking out of what is expected of him, and tried to show his strength through his facial expression. For “Dawn of New Era,” I illustrated a lion, which is a symbol of change, fighting against darkness. I use symbolic language from art history to give my personal narratives a deeper, more universal resonance, and also putting emotion is an important key to send my message to audiences.
Inspiration & Style
What initially inspired you to become an artist, and how did you develop your unique artistic style?
I was drawn to art by the events of 2020, a year that was unforgettable for everyone. Even amid tremendous hardship, people never surrendered hope and kept seeking happiness and working to change the world. That resilience became the foundation of my artistic vision. I work digitally, blending fantasy and realism to create images that carry emotional weight and symbolic meaning, communicating the message that people are strong no matter how tough the situations they face.
Creative Process
Do you have any rituals or routines that help you get into a creative mindset when starting a new project?
My creative process begins with immersing myself in the themes and emotions I want to convey. I gather visual references and reflect on current events or personal feelings before opening my digital canvas. I require being in a certain mood and mindset. Music and movies help me to get there. They are like a warm-up for my feelings, so that when I sit down to draw, I'm already feeling the emotions I would like to express in the piece. In that way, listening to music and watching movies and documentaries helps me enter the right emotional state.
Artistic Influences
How do you balance historical or artistic influences with your personal style, and how do these influences manifest in your work today?
my work is rooted in contemporary culture– particularly K-pop, anime, and Japanese aesthetics– blended with timeless classical symbolism. I draw from traditional iconography, like lions representing strength and change, and place them within modern, fantastical digital compositions. My art style is grounded in realistic depictions, while seamlessly blending fantastical, otherworldly elements to create a unique visual universe. With meticulous attention to detail rendered in a lifelike style, I craft imaginative spaces and figures that could never exist in reality and that draw the viewer into a world entirely my own.
Emotion & Expression
How do you use your art to evoke emotions, and what role does emotion play in your creative process?
Emotion is at the core of everything I create. I want viewers to feel tension between darkness and hope, and to recognize their own strength in that struggle. I use symbolic imagery– shattered mirrors, roaring lions, stormy seas– to externalize inner emotional states. I also incorporate fantasy elements intentionally, as a way to offer viewers an emotional escape and a sense of relief from the pressures of reality.
Exhibiting Work
How do you feel about exhibiting your artwork with The Holy Art Gallery, and what does this opportunity mean to you?
Exhibiting with The Holy Art Gallery is a meaningful and exciting opportunity. It allows my work to reach a broader audience and to be seen in a context that values artistic expression deeply. I hope this exposure helps my message, that human resilience and hope are powerful forces, resonate with viewers around the world. Being part of a gallery community also motivates me to continue developing my craft and pushing the boundaries of my art practice.
Future Goals
What are your long-term goals and aspirations as an artist, and how do you plan to achieve them?
my long-term goal is to continue creating art, mainly digital art, that connects with people on an emotional level and to grow as a storyteller through visual art. I hope to develop a larger body of work exploring themes of hope, resilience, and the human spirit. I also aspire to collaborate with musicians and other creatives, particularly in the animation worlds, to bring my visual storytelling to new platforms and audiences. Continued practice, study, and exhibition will be key steps in achieving these goals.
Audience Connection
What do you hope viewers take away from experiencing your art, and how do you aim to connect with them on an emotional or intellectual level?
I hope viewers take away the strength of human beings and feel strengthened. Life is full of struggle, and I want my art to remind people that they are capable of facing darkness with courage. On an emotional level, I aim to create images that linger, ones that viewers return to in their minds because something in the symbolism resonates with their own experiences. On an intellectual level, I invite them to decode the imagery and find their own meaning in the interplay of light, darkness, and transformation.
