Artist spotlight : Sammie Hsu
Artist Statement:
My work explores gentleness, emotion, and the quiet moments often overlooked in daily life. Through acrylics and experimental techniques, I create intuitive, layered compositions that invite viewers to slow down and reconnect with themselves. Rather than focusing on precise forms or narratives, I allow feelings to guide the process, letting each piece unfold naturally. I hope my art offers a sense of calm, warmth, and healing—becoming a soft presence within everyday spaces.
Inspiration & Style
What initially inspired you to become an artist, and how did you develop your unique artistic style?
I didn’t set out to become an artist in a very planned way. Art slowly became a space where I could breathe, release stress, and be honest with myself. Over time, through experimenting with acrylics and different tools, I stopped chasing “perfect results” and started trusting my instincts. My style grew naturally from that—layer by layer, feeling by feeling.
Creative Process
Do you have any rituals or routines that help you get into a creative mindset when starting a new project?
I usually start by calming myself down. Sometimes I clean my space, sometimes I play music, and sometimes I just sit quietly for a moment. I don’t plan too much in advance. I like to let the first color or movement decide where the work wants to go. Once I begin, everything becomes very intuitive.
Artistic Influences
How do you balance historical or artistic influences with your personal style, and how do these influences manifest in your work today?
Rather than being strongly influenced by specific artists or movements, I’m more inspired by everyday life—nature, small emotional moments, and personal experiences. These influences appear in my work through soft colors, layered textures, and a sense of openness, instead of direct symbols or narratives.
Emotion & Expression
How do you use your art to evoke emotions, and what role does emotion play in your creative process?
Emotion plays a big role in my work. I usually start from a feeling rather than an idea. Painting becomes a way for me to translate emotions into color and movement.
Exhibiting Work
How do you feel about exhibiting your artwork with The Holy Art Gallery, and what does this opportunity mean to you?
Exhibiting with The Holy Art Gallery is very meaningful to me. It allows my work to connect with audiences across cultures.
Future Goals
What are your long-term goals and aspirations as an artist, and how do you plan to achieve them?
I hope my work, including the “Little Garden” series, can naturally become part of everyday life and travel overseas. I want my art to offer a gentle sense of calm and healing wherever it goes.
Audience Connection
What do you hope viewers take away from experiencing your art, and how do you aim to connect with them on an emotional or intellectual level?
I hope viewers feel relaxed and invited to slow down. My work doesn’t need to be fully understood—if someone feels comforted or connected to themselves, that is enough.
