Art Exhibitions in Japan: How International Artists Can Exhibit in Tokyo

Tokyo is one of the most exciting art cities on earth, and one of the hardest to break into from abroad. Here is how international artists actually exhibit there.

Why Tokyo

Japan has a deep contemporary art culture and an audience that takes looking seriously. Harajuku in particular is where street style, design and art have collided for decades. For an artist, a Tokyo show on your CV carries weight across Asia and beyond.

Where we exhibit

The Holy Art shows in Jingumae, Shibuya, in the heart of Harajuku. A white gallery with an exposed pipe ceiling, freestanding partition walls forming intimate bays, a pale tiled floor and a wall mounted screen. Our next Tokyo exhibition runs 26 February to 1 March 2027.

You do not need to be in Japan

This is the part most international artists do not realise. You can exhibit in Tokyo without travelling and without shipping.

Physical exhibition means sending your framed work to the venue inside the drop off window. Digital exhibition means sending a file, which is then shown on gallery screens in the same room as the physical pieces. Both appear in the exhibition catalogue. Attendance is never required.

Shipping to Japan

Use a tracked and insured courier and allow extra time for customs. Include a commercial invoice describing the work, its value and that it is for exhibition. Acrylic glazing rather than glass is safer in transit. If shipping costs more than the exhibition itself, go digital, which many of our international artists do.

What you get

Your work on the gallery wall, on the digital screens, and in the catalogue. Promotion to our community of 260,000 artists, art lovers and collectors. An opening night with a full room.

How to apply

Applying is free. Submit images of your work, our curatorial team reviews every submission, and if selected an exhibition fee confirms your place. All mediums, open theme, every country welcome.

25,000 artists. 400 exhibitions. 20 cities.
