Artist spotlight : Valeria Mashkova-Demetriou

ARTIST STATEMENT:

I am based near to London. My method of painting is rooted in ancient craft, in a woman's ability to process and create. It`s connected to the force from which science, art, and literature emerge. I turn energy into a painting and it becomes a source that will serve the person. This kind of art liberates, envelops, and heals.
I started painting professionally in 2013, then studied at a fine art school. This profession created me. It helped me understand and master a unique way for a person to connect with a painting. That‘s how the method I use was born.
I work in my home-studio Mashkova.LAB in Welwyn Garden City. I usually work via private commission, and I hade place in my first public exhibitions in London in July 2026.

1. Inspiration & Style
What initially inspired you to become an artist, and how did you develop your unique artistic style?
Answer:

I considered myself an artist from a young age. I adored fashion design, painted, drew clothes, but then stopped.

After a big gap I started painting again as an adult. My life and the complexity of challenges were a preparation and part of this path.

Working on paintings gives me speed and intensity of internal and material change. I literally become a new person. I can say that, thanks to painting, my life has gained a great deal of joy and happiness.

This profession created me. It helped me understand and master a unique way for a person to connect with a painting. It took ten years to develop my method to transform energy into my work. I call it - ‘painting for self’.

2. Creative Process
Do you have any rituals or routines that help you get into a creative mindset when starting a new project?
Answer:

I don`t have any specific rituals. A new project starts when I hear or feel that something wants to appear in a material form.

If we are talking about private commissions, sometimes I can feel a new project before the client reaches out to me, or following an initial conversation I get a sense of shape, colour and subject.

3. Artistic Influences
How do you balance historical or artistic influences with your personal style, and how do these influences manifest in your work today?
Answer:

My influences are not limited to the art world. I get my inspiration from people like Christian Dior, Gabriel Marques, and Federico Fellini, their way of creation, their worldview and their life stories. I feel my soul belongs to beauty and culture.

Artists which I feel connections with are Mikhail Vrubel, Amadeo Modigliani, Poul Gauguin.

4. Emotion & Expression
How do you use your art to evoke emotions, and what role does emotion play in your creative process?
Answer:

The goal of my art is to transform any type of energy into joy. My paintings develop through several layers. The colours and shapes change and become more intense and full. I know when to stop because the painting finishes itself, at the point of balance.

5. Standout Projects
Can you share a project that stands out to you and describe the creative process behind it? Answer:

The project I’d like to share is my first independent project, The Alchemy Series. It came to me in an unexpected way. I hadn’t met the future owners of the painting, but through the creative process I got a strong sense of who they were, and their stories. It was a unique experience and I’m very pleased with the quality of the work.

6. Feedback & Growth
How do you incorporate feedback from critics or audiences into your work, and how do you balance this with your own artistic intuition?

Answer:

I always listen to feedback and think deeply about it. Everyone should have an opinion and feeling on art. However, I trust my vision and I would never exhibit something I didn’t fully love.

7. Motivation & Inspiration
How do you stay motivated and inspired, even when facing creative blocks or challenges?
Answer:

I know by experience that I will be challenged, it always takes time, but through the process the solution appears. This is my main inspiration.

How do you feel about exhibiting your artwork with The Holy Art Gallery, and what does this opportunity mean to you?

Answer:

It is an honour for me to join The Holy Art community. This is an opportunity to be part of a vibrant international art world. I’m very much looking forward to adding my energy to the exhibition.

9. Future Goals
What are your long-term goals and aspirations as an artist, and how do you plan to achieve them?
Answer:

I want to develop my understanding of the method I use, and my style. I want to share my paintings with the world, which I hope will bring joy to people's lives. I don’t like to have specific plans, I will just continue to work and see what happens!

What do you hope viewers take away from experiencing your art, and how do you aim to connect with them on an emotional or intellectual level?

Answer:

From experience, people have found joy, peace and stability when interacting with my art. Once the work leaves my studio, my part is finished. The painting connects with her owner through an ongoing dialogue that can last a lifetime…
